Stephanie O’Connell, VDM, Residency Trained in Internal Medicine

Dr. O’Connell was raised in New Jersey and obtained her Bachelor of Science from Rutgers University. After graduation from veterinary school at the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. O’Connell completed her one-year small animal rotating internship in East Greenwich, Rhode Island where she discovered her passion for internal medicine. She then completed a one-year specialty internship in internal medicine in Maitland, Florida followed by a three-year internal medicine residency in Louisville, Kentucky. After residency, Dr. O’Connell and her husband moved to Virginia where she worked as the sole internist in a busy specialty practice in Richmond for two years.

Dr. O’Connell practices internal medicine with a high standard of care and compassion for the pets and their owners, creating individualized diagnostic and treatment plans for each patient to improve their quality of life. She enjoys all aspects of internal medicine, but her primary clinical interests include endocrine diseases, immune-mediated diseases such as immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) and immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP), gastroenterology, urology, and liver diseases. She also has interests and some additional training in critical care, diagnostic imaging (ultrasound, fluoroscopy), endoscopy, and interventional radiology.

In her free time, Dr. O’Connell enjoys hiking, baking, playing volleyball, gardening, and yoga. She also loves to travel, try new restaurants, and spend time with her husband, calico cat Trixie, and family.
